From Nerve Cowboy #8 Fall 1999

beer, football, Baywatch,
trucks and/or motorcycles, tattoos . . .

Michael Estabrook

After six long years and two
rather wimpy boyfriends in a row
my daughter has found herself a macho
type guy, he's a "hunk"
I guess she would say, athletic
and good-natured, partying and
drinking beer all the time, freely admitting
he's not at college to study,
but rather to enjoy the social life,
to have some fun! And my daughter smiles
so broadly and sometimes even blushes
when she talks about him.
She's not thinking of marriage
or anything like that oh no of course not,
she's just having a really good time with her
boyfling (as her mother refers to him).
And for some peculiar reason
I'm beginning to feel a strange feeling,
something between guilty and anxious
because this young man would never
read a poem or watching a documentary
on TV, would never think
of listening to a Brahms symphony
during dinner or on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
So with my beautiful daughter's help
I compile what turns out to be a
rather formidable list of what I need to
concentrate on in order to become more
of a man, a real man,
and the first thing on that list is
to stop writing poems.
